Dr. Cyndi T. Lawton lives close enough to Summerville Medical Center (SMC) that she can get to the hospitals birthing suites in six minutes when a baby’s on the way. But there are lots of reasons she likes the location. “I grew up right here in Summerville,” says the young OB-GYN, who practices with Carolina Women’s Care. “This is home.” As a girl, she went to Oakbrook Elementary and Oakbrook Middle, ran track and cheered at Fort Dorchester High School and also volunteered at the hospital during her teen years. Always high-energy, she graduated high school early, at age 17, and finished her undergraduate degree at Clemson University by 19, giving her a jump-start on her doctor dreams. Now that’s she’s back, she couldn’t be happier to practice and raise a family here.† Her two sons, ages 1 and 3, were both born after high-risk pregnancies and required critical care during the first few weeks of life, giving her a fuller understanding of what families can face. “I’m never going to say that I’m glad I had that experience, but I’m glad for the things that I was able to take away from that.† It really has shaped how I deliver care in a good way.”
