The Swamp Fox volleyball team took the Bobcats to a third game Tuesday, but fell short of avenging an earlier loss to Bluffton.

The Bobcats, who have now claimed the Region 8-AAAA championship for two consecutive seasons, earned a 25-19, 23-25, 25-14 win over the Swamp Foxes.

“We played really hard in the first two games but hurt ourselves in the third game,” Ashley Ridge coach Chi-Chi Hurley said. “We didn’t run our bump sets well and that hurt us but I think tonight we showed we can play with a team as good as Bluffton.”

Had Ashley Ridge pulled off the upset, it would have secured a home match in the first round of the state playoffs scheduled to begin Oct. 29.

With the loss, the Swamp Foxes finished in a tie with Fort Dorchester for second place in the region.

Tiebreaker rules should give the Patriots the No. 2 seed for the region based on overall record. If that is indeed the case, Ashley Ridge will travel to the No. 2 seed from Region 7-AAAA for the first round while Fort Dorchester will open the playoffs by hosting Irmo. Ashley Ridge fought for a 19-19 tie in the first game Tuesday, but allowed Bluffton to score six straight points to earn the win.

“Our passes weren’t all there during the first game,” Hurley said. “Our hitting was there but we just couldn’t get it to our hitters enough.”

The Swamp Foxes spotted the Bobcats four points at the start of the second game, but rallied to take a 17-16 lead. Bluffton fought and tied the game at 22-all before the Foxes secured the win.

In the third game, Ashley Ridge overcame another slow start to pull within two points of Bluffton, but then the Bobcats finished strong.

Seniors Megan Saltzman and Brenna Swartz, along with Junior Caitlyn Fecko, had a strong night defensively on the Swamp Foxes’ Senior Night. Sophomores Chynna Hunt and Abigail Dunlap, along with senior Whitney Lewis, led the Swamp Fox offense.
