Berkeley Middle School played host to the Berkeley County School District 2013 Board of Education Art Show and Awards Ceremony last Tuesday, honoring students from every BCSD school.
At the conclusion of each year the Berkeley County visual arts teachers pick one piece of student artwork to represent their school at the art show. The superintendent, school board, and BCSD senior cabinet recognize the students at a ceremony and hand out art gift bags. The bags include: sketchbooks, colored pencils, a framed copy of their artwork and a certificate from Dr. Rodney Thompson.
“The collection demonstrates a wide variety of art projects,” said Fine Arts Coordinator Kathy Clark. “From traditional painting and drawing to fabric work to collage to printmaking to 3D sculptures.”
After the show the artwork is hung in the BCSD boardroom until next October. They will then move to the district office building for one year. Then the pictures will be given to the school where it hangs in their permanent collection.
After the artwork hangs in the BCSD boardroom, Superintendent Thompson and Berkeley County Superintendent Dan Davis select one piece of artwork from that year’s collection to hang in their offices for one year.
“Sometimes Dr. T selects more than one,” Clark said. “Sometimes I have to keep other folks from taking the work into their office, too.”
