No smoke detector or a non-working smoke detector is the primary reason so many die in fires in their own home each year say fire officials.
Smoke detectors batteries should be changed twice a year when the clocks are moved forward or back. They should be replaced every 10 years. They should be tested monthly.
Now that the weather is chilly, people will be lighting fires and using space heaters. Children should not be allowed within three feet of a space heater or fire. Fireplaces and chimneys should have yearly maintenance.
Families should also have a fire drill – in the dark – to simulate a real fire situation and make sure everyone knows how to get out safely.
