T-Breds eliminate Patriots from volleyball playoffs
Fort Dorchester was eliminated from the state volleyball playoffs Thursday with a 3-1 loss to South Aiken.
The Patriots had a solid start as they jumped out to a sizeable lead in the first game but the Thoroughbreds rallied for a 26-24 win. Fort Dorchester got its hitting going in the second game to earn a 25-21 win. After that, South Aiken was too strong at the net and the Thoroughbreds earned a pair of 25-15 victories to clinch the match and advance to the third round.
“At times we played well,” Fort Dorchester coach Tarshie Burrell said. “We just needed to stay ahead and failed to do so.”
The night marked the end of one of the best seasons the Patriot volleyball team has ever seen. Fort Dorchester finished as the region runner-up to Bluffton, a team that was ranked among the Top 10 Class AAAA teams for part of the season and that also advanced to the third round.
The Patriots finish the year with a 25-6 record.
“As far as this team, I wouldn’t trade anyone if I could,” Burrell said. “They were a true team and worked hard all season. I love them all and it’s hard to say goodbye to my six seniors. However, I am happy the program is moving in a positive direction.”
For South Aiken, the night marked its second consecutive win over a higher-seeded team. The Thoroughbreds entered the playoffs as a No. 4 seed, but upset No. 1 seed Carolina Forest in the first round.
“We’re very pleased,” South Aiken coach Laurie Ulmer said. “Our passing was great in the first round and then it brought us down a little tonight before we got it back together. Overall the girls are coming together as a team, working well together and playing with a lot of heart. Our Libero gave us everything she had tonight and our setter also gave us everything we were looking for. On the outside, Bailey (Parker) brought it. Really a lot of girls stepped up tonight.”
South Aiken faced Aiken, another No. 1 seed, in the third round Tuesday after press time.
