Summerville won a shootout with cross-town rival Ashley Ridge Friday.
The Green Wave earned a 39-33 victory to improve to 8-2 with a 4-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA.
“We scored 39 points but we never slowed them down,” Summerville coach John McKissick said. “Our defense didn’t play good so I just feel fortunate that we won. They have done a good job over there.”
Summerville clinched a region title with the win and can complete a clean sweep through the region with a win at Bluffton Friday. The Swamp Foxes (4-6, 2-2) are hoping to secure a spot in the playoffs with a win over Fort Dorchester this week.
“Both these offenses have a lot of playmakers so we felt like it might be a bit of a track meet,” Ashley Ridge coach Kenny Walker said. “I think we matched Summerville physically and our kids played with effort and that is all I ask of them. I’m disappointed with the loss, but I’m not disappointed with their effort.”
The opening 24 minutes of the game were largely a competition between the players wearing the No. 24 jerseys. Summerville sophomore Chris Felder carried 12 times for more than 100 rushing yards and two touchdowns in the first half while Ashley Ridge junior Tyler Garland carried 12 times for approximately 50 yards and two TDs.
Summerville opened the game with a 69-yard scoring drive. Felder had a 45-yard carry into the red zone and then capped the drive with an 8-yard run into the end zone.
Ashley Ridge answered by covering 80 yards to score. Swamp Fox quarterback Chandler Avenel had runs of 14 and 10 yards on the drive and completed a 15-yard pass to receiver Dashaun Santiago. Garland did most of the rest and scored on a run from seven yards out.
Summerville was set to take a 14-7 lead into the second quarter after Felder capped a 65-yard drive with a 4-yard scoring run. However, Donavan Thompson caught the ensuing kick off just in front of the goal line and dashed his way through traffic for a 99-yard TD return with 30 seconds remaining in the quarter.
Then the teams exchanged punts and scores.
After a David Kennedy punt was downed inside the Swamp Fox 10, Summerville made a defensive stand to set up a short field. The Green Wave capitalized when QB Sawyer Bridges connected with Donnell Bryan for a 15-yard TD reception.
Ashley Ridge responded with a 68-yard drive capped by Garland’s second TD. The key play on the drive was a 44-yard reception by Santiago.
The Swamp Foxes caught the break they needed on the next play from scrimmage when Thompson intercepted a Summerville pass at midfield. But five plays later, Summerville linebacker Codie Soto made an interception deep in Green Wave territory and returned it to the Swamp Fox 16 before Sean White tackled him to save a touchdown with eight seconds remaining in the second quarter. Then Kennedy nailed a 33-yard field goal to give Summerville a 24-21 lead entering the half.
Kennedy, who earlier in the week had been selected to participate in the North-South All-star game, pinned the Swamp Foxes down at their 4 early in the third quarter with another punt. The Green Wave defense then scored with a safety. Defensive back Tean Becoate put a big hit on the Ashley Ridge ball carrier and then a host of Summerville players joined in to bring the runner down in the end zone.
After the free kick, Summerville needed only one play to cushion its lead even more. Bridges hit a wide-open Johnston McCurry for a 43-yard touchdown pass for a 32-21 lead with the extra-point kick.
The lead carried into the fourth quarter, but the Swamp Foxes didn’t quit.
Defensive end Thomas Cooper recovered a Green Wave fumble to set the Swamp Foxes up with a first down at the Summerville 15. Two plays later, Avenel hit Santiago for a 14-yard TD catch with 8:55 remaining.
Summerville answered with a 74-yard scoring drive capped by a 37-yard run into the end zone by junior Darrell Ford.
But the Swamp Foxes shook it off and mounted a 64-yard scoring drive for the 39-33 margin. Avenel completed a 37-yard pass to Thompson on the drive, which was capped with a 35-yard scoring reception by Santiago.
The rally ended there, however, as the Summerville offense chewed up the final 2:21 of clock time with a drive deep into Ashley Ridge territory.
Felder led all rushers in the game with 167 yards on 26 carries.Summerville’s Darrell Ford added 128 yards on 17 carries.
Bridges completed 7 of 12 pass attempts for 92 yards and two TDs. Avenel completed 12 of 17 pass attempts for 189 yards and two TDs.
Santiago led all receivers with four catches for 108 yards and two TDs. For Summerville, McCurry had two catches for 52 yards and a score.
