Expectations are high for Green Wave, Patriot wrestlers
Two Summerville-area teams will enter the wrestling season ranked in the Top 10.
Summerville is ranked third and Fort Dorchester eighth in the South Carolina Wrestling Coaches Association preseason Class AAAA rankings released by scmat.com. The high school wrestling season begins in early December for most local teams and a new Top 20 will be released shortly after but for now coaches have voted based on the returning starters teams should have returning.
Lexington, which has five state qualifiers expected to return, is the top ranked 4-A team in the state. Despite having seven qualifiers slated to return, Rock Hill is ranked second. Hillcrest and Fort Mill round out the Top 5.
Ashley Ridge will enter the season ranked 18th, just behind 17th ranked Cane Bay. Other Top 20 teams include Beaufort, Bluffton, Stratford and Wando.
The Green Wave has five returning state qualifiers. James Sass placed second in the 106-pound division in both 2013 and 2012. Chad Wood placed second at 152 last year and fourth in the division in 2012. Tyler Fachko was a state qualifier at 120 last year and Anthony Collins qualified at 160.
Transfer student John Van Slooten joins the Summerville team this year after winning a pair of Class AA-A state championships at 145 and a Class AAA title at 140. Former Pinewood student Zach Heaton joins the Green Wave after placing third at 145 during last year’s SCISA championship meet.
Fort Dorchester has four qualifiers set to return.
Tyre Wright placed fourth at 113 last season and Jacob Hutchinson placed fourth at 170. AJ Alford and Joseph Hutchinson qualified last season in the 145 and 160 divisions.
Ashley Ridge should return qualifiers Christian Cuttino (132-pound division) and Tyler Moore (195).
Cane Bay should return qualifiers Eddie Brookshire (132) and Matt Rudy, who placed third at 182 last season.
