Dream 2013 Christmas Ornament To Benefit BIRDS Program

  • Wednesday, November 13, 2013

Looking for the gift that pays it forward—consider a couple of options that support the BIRDS (Birds In Residence Downtown Summerville)! For the second year in a row, the Summerville DREAM Christmas Ornament will feature a BIRDS sculpture subject with the proceeds going to benefit the continuation of the public art initiative begun this year in Historic Downtown Summerville. Last year’s DREAM 2012 ornament heralded the coming of the BIRDS program by featuring the Nuthatch –one of the first sculptures to be installed in the program. The 2013 DREAM Christmas ornament has the Canada Goose with holiday decoration and will raise money to go towards purchasing the most costly sculpture to be installed as part of the program. This edition of the Christmas Canada Goose is limited to the 175 produced. Like the other three BIRDS ornaments created thus far (Barred Owl, Mourning Dove and the Nuthatch), the Christmas ornament has been designed and hand-crafted by the talented mother-daughter team that owns Four Green Fields Gallery and Gifts, Jill and Robin Carway. Sales of this 2013 DREAM Christmas ornament will be available at Four Green Fields Gallery located at 119 Short Central Avenue and The Finishing Touch located on the corner of West Richardson and South Cedar Streets. All of the BIRDS ornaments are available for $15 each. For those wanting to buy the entire collection of ornaments, a four-pack of ornaments is available for $50—a savings of $10.

The DREAM Ornaments are annually presented by Summerville DREAM (Downtown Restoration Enhancement And Management), the non-profit community organization which works with the townspeople of Summerville to improve the town’s beauty, promote the health of its businesses and preserve its hometown atmosphere. BIRDS is a collaborative effort by the Audubon Center at Francis Beidler Forest, Sculpture in the South and Summerville DREAM to enhance the historic downtown through public art. The program’s goal is to draw visitors and residents to explore the streets, businesses and restaurants of Summerville on a bird scavenger hunt guided by the BIRDS poem. In 2013 four sculptures have been installed and/or unveiled in the historic downtown area with several more prepared to be installed and unveiled in early 2014.

Another great way to support and participate in the BIRDS program and provide an extra special gift idea is to sponsor one of the sculptures as several local families have done by funding the purchase and installation of the piece. Currently 10 of the 20 bird sculptures have been adopted for sponsorship by local families or organizations. Prices vary dependent on the size of the sculpture and complexity of the installation. Any business or individual interested in exploring this possibility can contact Mike Dawson at the Audubon Center at Beidler Forest at 843-462-2150 or Jim Reaves at sculptureinthesouth@gmail.com for more information.
