The family will receive friends and relatives at the church social hall following the memorial service. Burial will be private.
Gladys was born April 1, 1911 in the New Hope Community of Berkeley County, SC, daughter of the late James Marion Harvey and Josephine West Harvey. She was educated in Berkeley and Dorchester Schools and Winthrop College. In 1939 she wed Wilson Edward Knight of Summerville and they settled in the Knightsville Community.
They celebrated 50 years of marriage and were the proud parents of two daughters, JoAnn and Wendy. Her 39 year career as a dedicated educator began as a teacher in a one room school house in Berkeley County. After her initial job, she began her ultimate teaching job as third grade teacher in Dorchester District II at Knightsville Elementary School in Summerville. She retired in 1978 from her “calling” as a teacher, the job she truly loved.
Gladys’ enthusiasm for teaching was surpassed by her love and faith in God. She was a dedicated and faithful life member of Knightsville United Methodist Church since 1939 where she served for 50 years as church treasurer and communion server, Sunday school teacher and a life member of the United Methodist Womens Society.
Over her lifetime and to the age of 100, she was well known for her passion for her hobby of crocheting which was exhibited by beautiful handcrafted baby booties, baby blankets and afghans, which adorned multitudes of newborn babies in the Summerville area and beyond.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilson Edward Knight; five sisters, Lucile H. Murphy, Thelma H. Howard, Gertrude H. Chinners, Josephine H. Gelzer, Agnes H. Williams; two brothers, Marion Clifton Harvey and James Edward Harvey. She was also predeceased by her only grandson, Anthony Wilson Sullivan.
She is survived by her two daughters, Josephine (JoAnn) K. Weaver of Summerville, Wendy K. Lucas and husband Joe Lucas III of Charleston; two granddaughters, Joni Weaver of Summerville and Shawn W. Candelaria and husband David Candelaria of Summerville; one great grandchild, Raymond Cotton; also, nieces, nephews, great nieces and great nephews.
A special “thank you” to her “special” friends and relatives that have blessed her with your love, visits and homemade goodies over the years.
We would also like to thank Intrepid Hospice for their loving care Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to the Knightsville United Methodist Church, 1505 Central Ave., Summerville, SC 29483.
