The team travelled to the Boston area recently to compete in the Harvard-MIT Math Tournament.  The team placed in the top 50 percent in one round, competing against 143 teams of top math students from around the world.

Pinewood Preparatory School’s High School Math Team travelled to Boston to compete in The Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament in November. The nine sophomores, juniors and seniors competed against more than 800 students internationally in the world’s largest student-run math competition.

The Harvard–MIT Mathematics Tournament (HMMT) is an annual high school math competition which started in 1998. The location of the tournament, in Cambridge, Massachusetts, alternates each year between Harvard University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The contest is written and staffed entirely by Harvard and MIT students, and is considered to be one of the most prestigious high school math competitions in the world.

This was Pinewood’s first trip to this competition. Out of the 144 teams competing, Pinewood’s novice team finished in the top 50 percent at one of the rounds.

The team’s sponsor is Pinewood Math Teacher, Simona Stephens. “Our Team has competed at Clemson University (earning fourth place), Coastal Carolina University (earning second place), the College of Charleston, Furman University (earning fourth place), the SCISA Math Competition (earning third place), and the University of South Carolina,” she said. “The Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament is the most rigorous the Team has undertaken to date, helping them gain confidence to place even higher at future meets.”

Although the competition was the primary focus of the trip, the students also enjoyed a guided tour of MIT and lunch with five doctoral candidates, with whom they discussed undergraduate studies and career aspirations. The team also took in the sights, sounds, shopping and dining of the Boston area.

Pinewood Prep’s High School Math Team is comprised of the following students: Sean Carter, JD Chen, Laura Lai , Jin Oh, John Pan, Emily Pelcher, Ethan Wu, Jennifer Xie and Kimi Xu.
