The Ashley Ridge basketball teams opened their 2013-14 season Monday by sweeping James Island.
Sophomore Brandon Brown and senior Sean White led the Swamp Fox boys to a 68-52 win over the Trojans.
“I’m really proud of the way our guys competed,” Ashley Ridge coach Brian Welch said. “What a great way to begin the journey. James Island is a good and well-coached team with some guys with a lot of varsity experience so I knew they would be a good challenge for us. We got a lot of big contributions from a lot of different guys, which hopefully will continue.”
Brown finished with 21 points to lead all scorers. White scored 13 and fellow senior Don Smith scored 5. Also contributing for the Swamp Foxes were Andre Grant (4), Tray Jenkins (4), Corbin Landers (4), Josh Litchfield (3), Jerimiah King (2) and Tyler Garland (2).
James Hamilton led James Island with 18 points.
On Wednesday, the Swamp Foxes earned a 55-45 win at Hanahan. White led the Ashley Ridge shooters with 18 points and Raekwon Jones scored 13.
Hanahan’s Justin Pruitt led all scorers with 19 points.
The Ashley Ridge girls earned a 28-22 win over James Island.
“I thought our girls played really well on the defensive end and we owned the glass,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “We struggled offensively shooting the ball but got off to a hot start in the second half.”
The Lady Swamp Foxes claimed a four-point lead in the opening period and built it into a 15-point lead in the second half. James Island rallied in the final quarter, outscoring Ashley Ridge 10-4. However, the rally fell short.
“I was disappointed in the way we finished the game and the inability to hit free throws but I’m always glad to walk away with a win,” Shaw said. “Hopefully the first-game nerves are out of the way and now we can gain some confidence moving forward.”
Senior Shelby Daly and sophomore Katie Burnette both hit several jumpers and led all scorers with 9 points each. Sophomore Kelly Cousins added 6 points for the Lady Swamp Foxes and junior Ariel Glover finished with 4. Cousins also had a game-high 16 rebounds on the night.
Sara Wright and Sierra Williams led the James Island shooters with 4 points each.
The Lady Swamp Foxes fell 45-40 to Hanahan. Freshman Jada Speights and Cousins both had 10 points for Ashley Ridge.
