A new era of Fort Dorchester wrestling is off to a good start.

First-year head coach Ben LaPrad led the Patriot grapplers to a 47-27 victory over Stratford Thursday during the Fort’s season opener.

“I had hoped we would be a little further along by this point but we have had some problems with injuries and guys not making their weight,” LaPrad said. “But that is pretty typical coming off the football season and overall I’m getting good effort. As always, the Hutchinson twins and Tyre Wright are wrestling great. Also A.J. Alford turned in a gutsy performance tonight. We are going to need some younger guys to step up, but I think we will be okay as long as that happens.”

LaPrad took over the Fort Dorchester wrestling program this spring after his father, B.D., stepped down to take a position at River Bluff High School. The son had served as the team’s assistant coach for several seasons.

The Patriots forfeited two weight divisions Thursday while Stratford, who was without several wrestlers who also play football, forfeited three divisions.

Fort Dorchester earned bonus points during five individual matches. Wright (120-pound division), Xavier Branston (126) and Jacob Hutchinson (170), all pinned their opponents while Alford (152) and Joseph Hutchinson (182) won by major decision.

For Stratford, both Lamar Grey (113) and Ryan Adams (132) garnered bonus points with a pin.

The Patriots will participate in the Cane Bay Duals Dec. 13-14 and travel to Colleton County Dec. 17. They then return home for a Dec. 18 match with Wando.
