The Fort Dorchester boys handed Goose Creek its first loss of the season.
The unranked Patriots (5-0) earned a 62-55 victory Monday over the Gators (4-1), which entered the season as the No. 4 ranked Class AAAA team in the state coaches’ poll. Prior to Monday, the Gators had a lengthy winning streak going in its series with the Pats.
“Goose Creek has been the main thing on our mind since last week,” Fort Dorchester coach Leon Wheaton said. “We knew this was a statement game so while we didn’t look past Woodland, we did do some things to get ready for this game. Both teams were 4-0. Someone had to lose and I told our guys I didn’t plan on it being us.”
The Gators jumped out to a 4-1 lead, but the Patriots entered the contest with high energy. Fort Dorchester captured the lead in the first half of the opening period and never relinquished it.
The Patriots took a 23-14 lead into the second period and a 36-28 lead into the half. The Gators cut into that lead in the third and pulled within 2 halfway through the fourth.
It was anyone’s game until Dimitri Carter grabbed a rebound for the Patriots and passed to Khalil Backman, who scored on a break up court for a 57-54 Fort lead. After that the Patriots played solid defense and had key free throws from Travon Hamilton and Eric Heyward to ice the win.
“This is a great win because both teams are similar in that they are guard oriented,” Wheaton said.
Backman led the Fort scorers with 21 points and Heyward added 19.
Kameron Robinson scored 21 points for Goose Creek and Chris Singleton added 14.
Goose Creek starter Dantez Bennamon did not play in the game. Earlier in the day Fort Dorchester thought it might be without one of its starters as Ky Reese had been sick this week. However, Reese decided he was feeling well enough to play and made some key plays for the Patriots
