The Ashley Ridge wrestling team placed second at the Silver Fox Invitational tournament held at Dutch Fork High School Dec. 13-14.
Dutch Fork won the tournament with 297 points. Ashley Ridge was close behind with 252.5 points. This year 15 other teams participated in the tournament. Socastee, Swansea and River Bluff rounded out the Top 5.
Five Swamp Fox wrestlers advanced to the championship match for their weight division.
Tyler Moore won the 195-pound division with a 4-2 decision over Cody Wolford of Swansea in the championship match. Coltyn Remeika won at 170 with a 4-2 decision over Swansea’s Quovan Cannon in the championship match.
Ben Whitney placed second at 120 after falling 6-3 in the championship match to Socastee’s Justin Knipper. Chris Hudgens placed second at 145 after losing a 1-0 decision to Dutch Fork’s Parker Grizzle. Maurice Phillips placed second at 160 falling 8-3 to Greenwood’s Steven Crowder in the championship.
That weekend Ashley Ridge also had three wrestlers qualify for the state JV tournament. Qualifying during a match at Beaufort were Logan Ruddick (113), Will Pantone (145) and TJ Groom (160).
This week, the Ashley Ridge varsity earned a 40-24 win over Goose Creek to improve to 13-1 on the season. Whitney (120), Hudgens (145) and Moore (195) all pinned their opponent. Christian Cuttino (138) won his match by technical fall.
The Swamp Foxes only loss of the season came to Kellam High School out of Virginia Beach in the Silver Fox Invitational. Other teams Ashley Ridge defeated this season include Stall, Berkeley, Cane Bay, Lake City, Riverside, Manning, Myrtle Beach, South Brunswick, Wando, St. James and Aynor.
