Bomb scare shuts down town square

  • Sunday, December 22, 2013

A brief case with wires sticking out of it was seen behind a bench in Hutchinson Park early Sunday evening.

A citizen reported it to officials and at approximately 6:40 p.m., Summerville Police responded, along with Summerville Fie, Dorchester County EMS, SLED and, ultimately, the Charleston Explosives Team.

SPD cordoned off all of downtown Summerville from Doty Avenue to Magnolia to Richardson to Cedar Streets while waiting for SLED.

SLEDís Lt. Ed Pumphrey responded and called in Charleston bomb squad which arrived with a robot.

After the robot scanned the briefcase, Pomphrey suited up and walked to the briefcase, inspected it and called an ďall clear.Ē

SPD officers retrieved the case, opened it, revealing guitar strings, harmonicas and other instrument paraphernalia.

Law enforcement, the bomb squad, fire and rescue began clearing the scene at approximately 9:30 p.m.
