Mulkey Invitational JV tournament is this weekend

Roger Lee/Journal Scene The Green Wave girls JV basketball team prepares for the Louis Mulkey Invitational.

The annual Louis Mulkey Invitational junior varsity basketball tournament opens this weekend at Summerville High School.

The tournament is held annually in honor of Mulkey, a long-time Green Wave coach who lost his life fighting a blaze at the Sofa Super Store in West Ashley in 2007. Mulkey founded the event 11 years ago in an effort to give JV players in the area the opportunity to experience a tournament atmosphere similar to that varsity players have during the holidays.

“As far as I know this is the only JV tournament around,” Summerville JV Boys coach Ian Lenke said. “Louis use to run it and turned it into something the coaches love coming to and the kids love coming to so when he passed away we wanted to keep that going. It puts some focus on the JV and helps get that competitiveness going in the younger kids.”

The 2013 tournament runs Dec. 27-30, with Sunday being an off day, and features eight boys’ teams and eight girls’ teams. The finals are scheduled to begin at 5:30 p.m. Dec. 30.

On the girls’ side, play begins at 10 a.m. Dec. 27 with Ashley Ridge taking on Goose Creek. Fort Dorchester plays Wando at 12:30 p.m. James Island plays Bishop England at 3 p.m. Summerville plays Berkeley at 5:30 p.m.

On the boys’ side, Summerville plays Andrews at 11:15 a.m. Dec. 27. Beaufort plays Bishop England at 1:45 p.m. Fort Dorchester plays Wando at 4:15 p.m. Ashley Ridge closes out opening-day action with a 6:45 p.m. game against Goose Creek.

Wando is the defending Mulkey champion for the boys. Lenke’s team enters the tournament with a 2-2 record after suffering a loss in overtime to Wando Tuesday so the Green Wave is hoping to get another shot at the Warriors.

“I only have one player returning from last season so right now we are very helter skelter but we are improving,” Lenke said. “We are very athletic and the kids get after it.”

Bishop England is the defending Mulkey girls champion.

The Summerville girls enter the tournament with a 1-3 record.
