Summerville Police Department will be getting some upgrades thanks to a vote from Town Council at its special called meeting last Wednesday.
Council voted unanimously, with Terry Jenkins absent, to authorize the purchase of a new HVAC system and other fixtures for the deteriorating building. The purchase order is not to exceed $728,443 and is being paid from fund balance.
According to Director of Administrative Services Lisa Wallace, the police department has had problems with the current heating and cooling system for years. The building was constructed in 1986 and has cost the Town around $80,000 in repairs per year for the past several years.
“We can’t go through another summer with our police department having no air conditioning,” said Mayor Bill Collins.
Building Official Rich Palmer said the Town hired an engineering firm to give suggestions on replacing the system. They recommended a Mitsubishi “split system” that will allow the department to better manage all parts of the building.
Palmer said demolition for the project is extensive and will consume a large part of the project budget, but the demolition will also allow for other upgrades to the building.
The roof will be repaired, new ductwork will be installed and LED lights will be added, making it “an almost brand new building, mechanically speaking,” he said.
Mayor Collins said the new system is also beneficial because it can be installed with minimal disruption to the department.
With the changes in place, the mayor assured Council the upgrades will add new life to the aging building and will delay the move for the police department for a few more years.
