Patriots keep streak alive
The Fort Dorchester boys earned their third victory of the season over a Region 7-AAAA opponent Friday.
The Patriots improved to 6-0 with a 64-49 win over the Wildcats, their second over West Ashley this season. The victory follows a Fort win Monday over Goose Creek, which is considered the best of the Region 7 teams that have had a lot of success against the Region 8-AAAA teams over the past few years.
West Ashley nabbed several defensive rebounds and scored on some breaks to jump out to a 10-4 lead. Then Fort senior Dimitri Carter made some key plays, including a three-point shot and a steal, to get the Patriots back in the game.
The Fort gained some momentum after that and took a 30-25 lead into the half. In the third period, the Patriots outscored the Wildcats 26-9 to put the game out of reach.
“We did a good job crashing the boards and played with good defensive intensity,” Fort senior Eric Heyward said. “Our team chemistry is strong and that showed tonight.”
Heyward led all scorers with 21 points. Carter added 15 points and William Munoz added 10. Travon Hamilton and Justin Harris also scored for the Patriots.
Kevin Sobiesuo led the Wildcats with 12 points and B.J. Coakley added 10.
The Lady Patriots lost 53-35 to the Lady Wildcats, the top ranked Class AAAA team in the state.
West Ashley had a fast start to take a 36-17 lead into the half. Fort Dorchester came out of the locker room strong to cut into the lead, but West Ashley had too much momentum and talent.
The Fort boys are participating in the Modie Risher Tournament at Burke High School this weekend.
The Fort girls are participating in the Carolina Classic Tournament being held at several Charleston locations.
