A sophomore and a junior claimed two of the top honors for the sixth annual All-County Line all-star list.

Summerville Communications has released its All-County Line Football Team, a collaborative effort between the Summerville Journal Scene, Berkeley Independent and Goose Creek Gazette. The pool of players came from the following high schools: Ashley Ridge, Berkeley, Cane Bay, Cross, Fort Dorchester, Goose Creek, Hanahan, Stratford, Summerville and Timberland.

For the second consecutive year, Summerville’s John McKissick was named the Dorchester County Coach of the Year.

The Green Wave had a rough start as it lost starting tailback Davon Anderson before the season started and lost one of its top defensive athletes the third week of the season when defensive back Darin Smalls suffered a season-ending injury. Summerville lost that Week 3 game to Goose Creek and a Week 6 game to Stratford, but McKissick and his staff got the Wave back on track.

Summerville went on to sweep its region and advance to the semi-finals of the state playoffs for the first time since 2007. The team finished with an 11-3 record after falling 28-27 to Sumter in the semi-finals.

Green Wave quarterback Sawyer Bridges had a lot to do with that success, which is why he has been named the Dorchester County Offensive Player of the Year. Though only a sophomore, the second-year starter showed great composure and did a fine job of game management in 2013.

Bridges completed 148 passes (45.5%) for 2,248 yards and 21 touchdowns this season. The QB completed passes to 10 different players this season and four different Green Wave receivers had 20 or more receptions.

Bridges also rushed for 289 yards and four TDs, averaging 3.6 yards per carry.

Other players considered for the honor included Fort Dorchester QB Kobe Garrett and Ashley Ridge receiver Donovan Thompson.

Summerville defensive end Kawuan Cox has been named the Dorchester County Defensive Player of the Year. The junior had 95 tackles, including 64 unassisted. He led the Green Wave in sacks with 14 and QB hurries with 23.

The pressure the second-year starter managed to consistently apply was also a factor on many plays for which he didn’t make the tackle.

Other players considered for the honor include Summerville linebacker Mac McCurry and defensive back Kevin Dickinson, Fort Dorchester lineman Eurndraus Bryant and Ashley Ridge defensive back Kendall Felder.

The Stratford Knights claimed three of the other top honors.

Stratford’s Ray Stackley was named the Berkeley County Coach of the Year. Stackley guided the Knights to a 12-3 record and an appearance in the Class AAAA, Division 2 state championship game. There, the Knights fell to Northwestern.

Stratford’s other losses came to Goose Creek and South Florence. The South Florence loss was avenged in the second round of the playoffs.

Stratford QB Jacob Park was named the Berkeley County Offensive Player of the Year.

It was a special season for Park. The University of Georgia commitment threw for nearly 3,700 yards and 34 touchdowns. He is the lone four-year starter at quarterback in the school’s history and finished with 9,441 yards of total offense and 96 total touchdowns.

Park is this year’s South Carolina Mr. Football and represented the state in the Shrine Bowl game. He will also play in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl on Jan. 4 in San Antonio.

Stratford outside linebacker Michael Simmons was named the Berkeley County Defensive Player of the Year.

Simmons was the heart and soul of Stratford’s defense and made over 90 tackles on the strong side. He was equally as productive in the leadership category.

“He was the leader of our defense both physically and emotionally,” Stackley said. “The players fed off of his enthusiasm and his verbal leadership.”
