Eagles hand Patriots their first loss

Roger Lee/Journal Scene Fort Dorchester senior Eric Heyward was named the Most Outstanding Player for the 2013 Modie Risher Classic.

The Patriots turned in a strong performance at this yearís Modie Risher Classic, but it wasnít quite strong enough.

Fort Dorchester fell 49-47 to Beaufort Saturday in the championship game for the Burke High School tournament.

This is the second straight year the Patriots have finished as the runner-up for the tournament.

Fort Dorchester held a 41-29 lead with 6:07 to play but Beaufort came charging back and scored the final 6 points of the fourth quarter to send the game into overtime tied at 43. Then Beaufort outscored the Patriots 6-4 in overtime to claim the tournament title and send notice to Region 8-AAAA teams.

Beaufort improved to 9-1 with the win while fellow Region 8-AAAA team Fort Dorchester dropped to 8-1.

Tournament MVP Kendrick Colvin led all scorers in the championship with 17 points. Senior Eric Heyward led Fort Dorchester with 13 points and was named the tournamentís Most Outstanding Player. William Munoz added 10 points for the Patriots.

On Dec. 27, Fort Dorchester earned a 57-46 win over Timberland to advance to the championship. Heyward and Munoz again led the charge, combining for 19 points.

Fort Dorchester opened the tournament Dec. 26 with a one-sided win over Estill. The Patriots jumped out to an early lead and cruised to a 94-18 victory.

Munoz and Travon Hamilton both scored 13 points for the Patriots, who had five players in double figures and 11 enter the scoring column.

Heyward and Jaquan Jones both scored 12 points and Justin Harris 10. Ky Reese, Mason Snipe, Dimitri Carter, Wayne Chisolm, Khalil Backman and James McFadden also got in on the scoring frenzy.

The Patriots have four straight road games (at Goose Creek, St. Johnís, Beaufort and Ashley Ridge) before returning home to host region foe Colleton County Jan. 21. However the Jan. 17 game at Ashley Ridge is a short ride for Patriot fans.
