Last June the S.C. National Guard 1223rd Engineer Company based in Summerville deployed more than 150 guardsmen to Afghanistan. As their expected return – summer 2014 – comes nearer, the unit’s Family Readiness Group is beginning to plan a celebration for their arrival.
But after sending packages overseas for the holidays the group has depleted its funds.
In order to raise money for the event, the 1223rd Family Readiness Group is hosting a spaghetti dinner fundraiser in partnership with the Eastern Star of Hampton.
For $6 per dinner, guests will receive spaghetti, garlic bread and a dessert. The event will be held Jan. 17 and dinners will be available for dining in or pick up at the National Guard Armory located at 2735 W. 5th North Street.
For a minimum of five dinner orders, members of the Family Readiness Group will also deliver the dinners free of charge to Summerville locations.
“I’m really excited, I get all excited when I start talking about it too,” said Sharon Seavey, who began working with the Family Readiness Group after her daughter joined the National Guard.
In order to know how many supplies they need, the group is asking those interested in participating to place their orders ahead of time, by Jan. 14, by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org.
