Ashley Ridge matched a Top 5 team for two quarters Tuesday but the other two quarters didnít go well for the Swamp Foxes.

The Ashley Ridge boys fell 65-47 to Wando, which is ranked fifth among Class AAAA teams in the South Carolina Basketball Coaches Association rankings released Jan. 7. The Warriors improved to 12-3 with the win while the Swamp Foxes dropped to 5-7.

Ashley Ridge battled Wando for a 15-all tie entering the second period but then only managed two field goals in the second period and trailed 28-21 at the half.

The Swamp Foxes tightened up on defense in the third period to hold Wando to 8 points, but didnít get much offense other than a pair of 3-point shots from Corbin Landers and Tyquan Tucker.

Wando scored the first 4 points of the final period to take a double-digit lead and kept the Swamp Foxes at bay afterwards.

Sophomore Jamez Rogers finished with a game-high 23 points for the Warriors and junior Amp Moore added 17 points.

Junior Raekwon Jones led Ashley Ridge with 12 points and Landers added 7 for the Swamp Foxes.

The Ashley Ridge girls came much closer to defeating the Lady Warriors in a battle between unranked teams.

The Lady Swamp Foxes took a 3-point lead in the first period and extended it 8 by the half. Then Wando hit four 3-pointers during a 14-5 run to take the lead with just under three minutes remaining in the third period.

Ashley Ridge only trailed by 3 entering the final period and cut the lead to 1 but then Wando sank two more shots from behind the arc to pull ahead by 7. The Lady Swamp Foxes continued to fight but Wando made enough free throws to secure the lead and eventually the win.

Sophomore guard Katie Burnette led the Ashley Ridge shooters with 14 points and senior Shelby Daly added 12 points for the Lady Swamp Foxes. Courtney Wood led Wando with 20 points while Clare McTighe added 12 and Kimberly Smalls 10 for the Lady Warriors.

The Ashley Ridge teams host Stratford Friday and then open region play with a road game at Bluffton Jan. 14.
