Garrett named Patriot MVP

File QB Kobe Garrett was named the MVP for the Patriot football progam Friday.

A player with big stats and a big work ethic has been named the MVP for the Patriot football team.

Junior quarterback Kobe Garrett received the top award during the Fort Dorchester Football Banquet held at the school Jan. 10. In his first year as the staring QB for the Patriots’ varsity, Garrett passed for more than 1,000 yards and rushed for more than 1,000 yards.

“Kobe had a great year and is certainly deserving of the award,” Fort Dorchester coach Steve LaPrad said. “He is one of the hardest working of all the quarterbacks we’ve had. One of the best things about him is he always wants to do more to help his team. He wants to play defense and return kicks and he certainly could if we let him.”

Garrett completed 79 of 159 pass attempts for an average of 14.2 yards per pass and 10 touchdowns last season. He carried the ball 148 times for a 7.5 yards per carry average and eight TDs. He finished the season with more than 2,200 total yards for an average of 204 yards per game.

Fort Dorchester also handed out 15 other awards during the banquet.

The Patriots finished the season with a 7-4 record after being eliminated by Dutch Fork in the first round of the playoffs. LaPrad told his players it was a good season and that with more than 70 lettermen set to return next year he believes the team came do even better in 2014.

“We had a good year,” he said. “We lost a lot of close games and got a tough draw in the playoffs with Dutch Fork. They walked over nearly everyone except Spring Valley and finished as the state champion. Being successful in football is a lot about timing and involves some luck. You have to make the plays when you get a chance and we just need to work harder to make sure we make more of those plays when we have the chance.”
