Summerville girls defeat No. 6 Colleton
The Summerville girls opened region play Tuesday with a victory over the team many believe is the Lady Green Wave’s toughest region opponent.
Summerville (9-6, 1-0) earned a 55-50 win over Colleton County (10-3, 0-1) in the Green Wave gym. With a No. 6 ranking, the Lady Cougars are the only Region 8-AAAA team included in the Class AAAA basketball Top 10 rankings released Monday.
“It was a hard fought game between two good teams who obviously have similar goals for this time of year,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “I think there’s a lot of mutual respect between the two programs and it’s a good feeling as a coach to see your players compete with intensity and give the fans an exciting game to watch.”
The Lady Cougars jumped out to a 16-9 lead in the opening period, but Summerville opened the second period with an 11-0 run to take the lead. Colleton’s Deyja Brown then hit a 3-pointer and Colleton finished the period strong to take a 25-24 lead into the half.
Summerville stepped up defensively in the third period to open up a 6-point lead. However, Colleton picked up its intensity and quickly tied the game in the fourth.
To the delight of the fans, both teams used an up-tempo style in the final six minutes of play.
Senior Heather Chapman scored 8 of her team-high 16 points in the fourth period. Rodnesha Capers, who hit a pair of 3-point shots in the first half to keep the game from getting out of hand, finished with 13 points for Summerville. Zuri Green and Ashley Green both had strong defensive games and combined for 16 Summerville points.
Alicia Williams led Colleton with 18 points and Brown finished with 14.
