The Fort Dorchester boys battled through two overtime periods Friday at Ashley Ridge to earn a 75-66 victory.

The first three periods featured multiple lead changes. The Patriots ended the third with a 10-0 run to take a 46-38 lead.

Fort Dorchester (9-3, 1-1) extended the lead to 11 points in the fourth, but the Swamp Foxes (5-10, 0-2) never gave up the fight and went on a 7-0 run late in the period.

Trailing by 2 with only 90 seconds remaining in regulation, the Swamp Foxes needed a big defensive play and got it when Tyquan Tucker made a steal. A shot on the other end of the court bounced off the rim with approximately 60 seconds remaining but Raekwon Jones tipped it into the goal for a 55-55 tie.

Fort Dorchester’s Eric Hayward drove the lane in the closing seconds hoping to get a basket or at least a foul but his shot was blocked cleanly.

In overtime, the Patriot seniors took charge to earn the Fort the win.

Dimitri Carter grabbed eight rebounds, scored 13 points and made two steals in the two overtime periods. Hayward had 6 points and three rebounds in the overtime periods.

“Our coaches prepare us for adversity such as overtime,” Carter said. “We were prepared for it and we just stuck together and kept our heads in the game. We run a lot during practice so fatigue wasn’t really an issue. The adrenaline kicked in and we just focused on our game.”

It seemed the Patriots had the game won in the first overtime period when Carter hit a pair of free throws for a 2-point Fort lead with only 5 seconds remaining. However, Jones quickly drove the ball across mid court and passed to Corbin Landers. For the third time in the game and the second time in the overtime period, Landers sank a shot from behind the arc for a 63-all tie.

The Patriots pulled ahead in the second overtime period but the Swamp Foxes managed to stay within 3 until the final 60 seconds. Then Fort Dorchester grabbed some key rebounds and made free throws to secure the win.

Both teams had two players post double-digit scoring.

Carter led all scorers with 21 points and Hayward finished with 20. Tucker led the Swamp Foxes with 17 points and Sean White finished with 14 points.

The night marked the third straight loss in overtime for the Swamp Foxes, who also suffered overtime losses to Bluffton and Stratford.
