Dr. Jason Highsmith's practice involves the full spectrum of neurosurgery, from pinched nerves to brain tumors.
He chose the field partly because of its variety and rapid technological advances. He has already seen a great deal of change since 2000 when he started his six-year neurosurgery residency. "The options we have surgically are much improved. Less invasive options are more prevalent," he says. Many of the procedures Dr. Highsmith currently performs are minimally invasive back surgeries, which may only require an overnight hospital stay. Yet he has a conservative approach to recommending surgery and believes that in most situations non-operative solutions should be exhausted first. His desire to educate patients led him to join a respected roster of experts on the editorial board of the website SpineUniverse. That, in turn, led Penguin Publishing to invite him to co-write "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Back Pain," just published in 2011.
