Summerville grapplers take tight match with Fort Dorchester

The Fort Dorchester wrestling team had a chance to upset Summerville Wednesday but the Green Wave escaped the threat.

Summerville earned a 36-30 win at Fort Dorchester to complete a clean sweep of its Region 8-AAAA opponents. But the victory didn't come easy for the Green Wave, the No. 2 ranked Class AAAA team in the state.

“I knew coming over here these guys were going to fight us and we didn't fight back hard enough,” Summerville coach Darryl Tucker said. “They out fought us tonight and as a coach that is discouraging. … We are very lucky to leave tonight with the win.”

Both teams won seven matches. Both teams won three matches by pin to earn bonus points.

The difference in the match was the 6 bonus points Fort Dorchester forfeited in both the 106-pound and 113-pound weight classes.

Of the six matches won by decision, only one was decided by more than 2 points. That was the 7-1 decision Fort Dorchester's Joseph Hutchinson earned over Corey Alumbaugh in the next-to-last match of the evening to pull the Patriots within 3 team points of the Green Wave.

The decision took the score to 33-30 and left everything riding on the 195-pound match between Summerville's Eric Henderson and Fort Dorchester's Asa Gillard.

If Gillard could win by major decision, technical fall or pin fall, the Patriots would win. Anything less and the Green Wave would win since Summerville had the edge when it came to tiebreaker criteria.

After two periods the match was at a 1-all stalemate. Henderson then scored on a reversal and held on for a 3-2 victory to clinch the win for Summerville.

“I knew my team was counting on me so I just concentrated on staying calm,” Henderson said. “I felt he was kind of high so I made a move to get out and on top.”

One of the other tighter matches came at 132, where Summerville's Austin Delancey and Fort Dorchester's Demetrius Ferguson battled to a 5-5 score after three periods. Then Ferguson earned a 7-5 decision in the overtime period.
