One Summerville team weathered the long trip to Bluffton Tuesday better than the other.
The Lady Green Wave basketball team earned a 68-38 win over the Lady Bobcats to remain on top of its region. Summerville outscored Bluffton by 5 points in both of the first two periods and then broke the game open in the third.
“We played well enough to win on the road,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “It was our first region road win, and you can’t take those for granted. Hopefully we can keep playing hard and intense the rest of the way.”
Green Wave senior Zuri Green scored a game-high 21 points while Rodnesha Capers added 15 for Summerville and Heather Chapman chipped in 10. Baylor Davis led the Lady Bobcats with 11 points.
Summerville improved to 11-6 on the season with a 3-0 mark in Region 8-AAAA games. Bluffton fell to 7-10 and 0-3.
On Friday, Summerville hosts a showdown with the only other undefeated girls’ team in the region, Ashley Ridge. Tip off will follow the JV boys’ game, which should be finished by 7 p.m.
The Summerville boys suffered their first region lost Tuesday, falling 68-59 to Bluffton. The Bobcats improved to 11-3 with a 3-0 mark in region play to move into first place. Summerville fell to 12-5 and 2-1. The teams will meet again in Summerville Feb. 7.
The Green Wave fell behind 21-6 in the opening period, but rallied to tie the game before the half. Bluffton then pulled ahead again to force Summerville to play catch up in the second half.
Summerville senior John Jenkins scored a game-high 26 points, but Bluffton had three players post double-digit scoring. Jae Middleton finished with 22 points to lead Bluffton. D.J. Dobson had 16 points and Adriel Willis added 13
