CSU announces baseball game times for 2014

Charleston Southern has announced game times for its 2014 baseball schedule.

The Buccaneers are scheduled for 16 night games under the lights at CSU Ballpark, including matchups with their Charleston-area rivals College of Charleston and The Citadel. CSU will also play Friday and Saturday Big South Conference games at night. The Bucs open the 2014 season against Villanova at 4 p.m. on Feb. 14.

For their Big South home series and their series against Toledo in early March, the Bucs will play Friday and Saturday games at 6 p.m., followed by a 2 p.m. series finale on Sundays. Game times for CSU’s season-opening series against Villanova (Feb. 14-16), Siena (Feb. 22-23), and Holy Cross (March 1-3) all vary.

The Bucs will host night games against local rivals College of Charleston and The Citadel, along with in-state opponents Wofford and USC Upstate all under the lights with a 6 p.m. first pitch.

The Bucs open the season with 17 of their first 18 games in Charleston. CSU plays at College of Charleston on Feb. 18 at 4 p.m. and travels to Georgia on March 5.

The season-opening series against Villanova is Feb. 14-16 at CSU Ballpark.

Women’s tennis

The Charleston Southern women’s tennis team was voted second in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll by the leagues head coaches, as announced today by the conference office.

The Buccaneers claimed two first place votes and 90 points to place second in the voting behind Winthrop. Charleston Southern went 14-7 overall, 8-1 in Big South Conference play last season, making it to the Big South Tennis Championship match before falling to the Eagles.

Charleston Southern returns their top five players from last season, including All-Conference singles selections Marketa Placha and Yvonne Hubler, as well as 2013 Big South Flight Winners Alexandra Walters (Flight 4) and Alia Nour (Flight 5) as CSU will look to make another run through the conference schedule as they continue their quest to make the NCAA tournament.

Winthrop University’s women’s tennis team has been voted first in the Big South Conference’s annual preseason poll as the Lady Eagles picked up eight first-place bids and 98 points in earning its ninth consecutive preseason No. 1 ranking.

Liberty finished third with 74 points, while fourth with 70 points was Campbell, followed by Coastal Carolina with 68 points. UNC Asheville landed in the No. 6 slot with 47 points, while Radford’s 35 points was good for seventh. Gardner-Webb was selected eighth with 34 points, while Longwood and Presbyterian College round out the poll tied for ninth place as each school notched 17 points.
