Free tax prep if income under 95K

  • Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Trident United Way and The Benefit Bank of South Carolina are providing free tax filing help that will guide families toward the tax credits they have earned.

Families earning less than $95,000 are eligible for free tax preparation.

The tax help is at the Dorchester Prosperity Center, 222 Old Trolley Road in Summerville.

Most notably, many low- and moderate-income families fail to claim the Earned Income Tax Credit (EITC), a federal work incentive worth up to $5,000. Free tax providers all make sure filers apply for EITC if they’re eligible. Last year, Trident United Way and the Urban League helped 2,300 families file tax returns and claim nearly $3 million in credits. The average family got $1,300 back from the IRS.

Filing can be done electronically and refunds returned quickly.
