DD2 names new schools

  • Wednesday, January 29, 2014

Sand Hill Elementary, Dr. Eugene Sires Elementary and Alston-Bailey Elementary are the three new elementary school names voted into being Monday night by the Dorchester District 2 Board of Trustees.

Each of the names were the top vote getters in a community poll the district took between December and January.

Community input was requested so the board could learn what its community thought, but it wasn’t the only criteria the board based its decision on. However, after some debate and much discussion, members of the board compromised on Elementary School #3 and used both Alston and Bailey to honor two highly influential African American leaders who put education first in the Brownsville community where they lived and worked.

After the vote, current community leaders took the podium to thank the board for listening. A representative of the Sand Hill Community Association, and three gentlemen from the Brownsville/Robynwyn community all thanked the board for its compromise and for listening, and commended it for its wisdom.

Sand Hill is the name for Elementary School #1 in the East Edisto area, Eugene Sires for Elementary School #2 in the Pine Trace area, and Alston-Bailey for Elementary School #3 next to Alston Middle School.
