Pinewood Prep’s High School Math Team triumphed at the 2014 SCISA High School State Math Competition in Sumter this past week.
Pinewood’s two teams competed against 28 other teams – comprising 140 top math students from across the state.
The Pinewood team of Ryan Kim, Kimi Xu, Jindong Chen, Sean Carter and Fanyi Kong garnered first place overall, with a margin of 10 points over the second place competitor.
The Pinewood team of Meghan Kuhn, Deborah He, Yalin Zhang, Clayton Are and Katie Smoak placed ninth overall.
In individual scoring, Ryan Kim placed fifth in State; Kimi Xu placed sixth in State; and Jindong Chen placed seventh in State.
Alternates Olivia Coyle and Jonathan Zhang also secured high individual scores.
Pinewood’s High School Math Team has garnered attention recently, having just returned from the Harvard-MIT Mathematics Tournament, where it placed in the top half of 143 teams of top math students from around the world.
