The Summerville girls defeated Ashley Ridge 56-47 in a packed gym Friday to move into first place for Region 8-AAAA.
“Both sides played very well and as a team we want to thank all the Summerville faculty, students and fans who came out to share the moment with us,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “It was a great night for high school basketball in our town.”
Ashley Ridge also brought a large contingent of fans that came out in hopes of seeing the Lady Swamp Foxes hand the Lady Green Wave its first region loss of the year. They left disappointed as Summerville swept the varsity games.
Summerville outscored Ashley Ridge 13-7 in the opening period and 20-12 in the third to take a 43-28 lead into the final eight minutes. Ashley Ridge finished strong, scoring 19 points in the fourth, but the deficit was too large.
Rodnesha Capers led the Green Wave charge and finished with a game-high 17 points. Zuri Green and Heather Chapman both added 12 points for Summerville. Green was 3 of 4 from behind the arc and Capers was 2 of 6.
“Dalexis Aldridge had a big night on the boards for us and Ashley Green made some big defensive plays and offensively helped us control tempo of the game in the second half,” Legare said.
Katie Burnette and Shelby Daly both scored 9 points to lead the Lady Swamp Foxes. Burnette was 2 of 4 from behind the arc.
Neither team had a very good night at the free-throw line. Summerville was 6 of 28 at the charity stripe while Ashley Ridge was 4 of 12.
Summerville improved to 12-6 with a 4-0 mark in region play with the win while Ashley Ridge fell to 11-5, 3-1.
The Lady Green Wave travels to Colleton County Friday while the Lady Swamp Foxes host Bluffton.
