Friday’s game is key for Summerville girls
If you are a fan of girls’ high school basketball then a short trip to Walterboro Friday might be worth your while.
The Lady Green Wave faces one of its biggest challenges of the year when it hits the road for a rematch with Colleton County. Summerville is ranked eighth in the South Carolina Class AAAA girls’ rankings and Colleton County is ranked ninth. Tip off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
A lot is riding on the game as Summerville is 4-0 in Region 8-AAAA with a win over all region opponents except Fort Dorchester, which Summerville will not face until Feb. 8. Colleton County is 3-1 in region play and needs to win this week in order to control its own destiny in the hunt for the region crown.
“We just have to continue to prepare for the challenges of our region schedule the way we have done the last four games,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “It’s always a great game when we play Colleton. We are aware of the difficulty of playing at their place, but we feel fortunate to have a group of returners that has won there before.”
The teams last met in Summerville Jan. 14 when the Lady Green Wave fought to earn a 55-50 victory. Heather Chapman led the Green Wave attack and finished with a team-high 16 points while six other players also scored for Summerville.
Alicia Williams scored a game-high 18 points for Colleton County, which had five other players score.
The fourth quarter of that game was a run-and-gun affair.
After the girls duke it out Friday, the Green Wave boys will take on the Cougars. When they last met, Summerville earned a 53-37 victory.
