The Ashley Ridge girls claimed consecutive wins last weekend to remain in the hunt for the region crown.
The Lady Swamp Foxes followed a 33-32 win over Bluffton Friday with a 47-44 win Saturday at Colleton County, the No. 9 Class AAAA team in the state coaches rankings.
“It was certainly nice to go on the road and get a big win over a quality team,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “It’s the first time in school history our girls’ program has beaten Colleton County and it’s our first win against a ranked team.”
The Lady Swamp Foxes jumped out to a 19-11 lead at the half and then held off a hard-fighting Colleton team. Senior Shelby Daly led the Ashley Ridge offense with 13 points and Shamaria Myers added 9 for Ashley Ridge.
“Our half-court defense was as good as it has been all year and we were aggressive on offense,” Shaw said. “We never trailed in the game and it seemed like every time Colleton got close we would answer. I’m very proud of our mental toughness.”
Deyja Brown led all scorers with 15 points and Alicia Williams chipped in 12 for Colleton.
Ashley Ridge improved to 13-5 with a 5-1 mark in Region 8-AAAA and moved into second place in the region behind Summerville. Colleton dropped to 14-5, 3-3.
The game against Bluffton was a back-and-forth affair. Bluffton took a one-point lead into the fourth period, but was then outscored 10-8 in the final eight minutes.
Daly again led Ashley Ridge with 11 points while Ariel Glover added 6. Bluffton’s Dynasty Mervin led all scorers with 16 points.
The streak of tough breaks for the Ashley Ridge boys continued last weekend as they lost consecutive games. After falling to Bluffton 66-39, the Swamp Foxes fell 79-78 to Colleton in overtime.
Sean White and Raekwon Jones both scored in double figures but Latrell Nieves scored 35 points for the Cougars. Ashley Ridge had the lead in the closing seconds but then Nieves hit a 3-point shot near the buzzer to send the game into overtime.
