The Ashley Ridge girls made an 11 to 8 run in the final period Tuesday to pull away from Fort Dorchester and earn a 44-40 victory.
The Lady Swamp Fox post players had a big night as Ashley Ridge claimed its third straight Region 8-AAAA win. Center Ariel Glover scored a game-high 16 points for Ashley Ridge while forward Kelly Cousins finished with 14 points.
“Offensively we came ready to play,” Cousins, a team co-captain, said. “That was one of our faster starts this season.”
Ashley Ridge outscored Fort Dorchester 9-8 in the opening period. The next two periods were a stalemate with each team scoring 14 points in the second and 10 in the third.
In the final period eighth-grade guard Shamaria Myers gave the Lady Swamp Foxes a boost with a 3-point shot for a 36-32 Ashley Ridge lead. The Lady Patriots never stopped fighting, but the Ashley Ridge post players continued to shine, making buckets and key rebounds late in the game.
Jailah Melvin led the Fort Dorchester shooters with 13 points and Erika Cobb added 8 for the Fort.
Ashley Ridge improved to 14-5 with a 6-1 mark in region play. The Lady Swamp Foxes’ games with Summerville and Colleton County next week will likely determine the region championship.
“We are excited because we know if we just believe in ourselves we can reach our goals,” Cousins said. “We’ve had some players step up lately and that has been huge for us. Shamaria Myers is only an eighth-grader but she is becoming very reliable.”
Fort Dorchester dropped to 7-9 and 3-4 with the loss.
Ashley Ridge travels to Beaufort Friday.
Fort Dorchester travels to Colleton County Friday and then hosts Summerville at 7 p.m. Saturday.
