Four Panther grapplers earn a state title

Provided Pinewood wrestlers (holding plaques, l-r) Grayson Charpia, Matthew Latham, Austin Murphy and Cameron Poaps all won an individual state championship Saturday.

The Pinewood Prep wrestling team followed a third-place finish at the state Duals Championship with a solid performance at the SCISA State Individual championships.

On Saturday, the Panthers traveled to Cardinal Newman in Columbia for the SCISA Individual championships and earned the third most points out of the teams participating. Cardinal Newman tallied 214 team points while Hammond tallied 150 and Pinewood tallied 130.

The Panthers had four wrestlers place first in their weight class to claim an individual state championship.

Pinewood eighth-grader Austin Murphy defeated Bennett Egan of Cardinal Newman in the championship match for the 106-pound class.

Pinewood eighth-grader Matthew Lantham pinned Evan Mikula of Cardinal Newman to win the 120-pound class.

Pinewood junior Grayzon Charpia defeated Thomas Smith of Heathwood Hall in the 195-pound championship match.

Pinewood senior Cameron Poaps pinned Nick Rich of Organgeburg Prep to claim the 220-pound championship.

Pinewood’s Clayton Are and Sam Yun both placed third in their weight class. Other members of the Pinewood team who participated were: Steven Kennedy, Mills Rowland, Brad Richards and Alex Nelson.
