More than 140 South Carolina Electric & Gas contractors were released Feb. 5 to assist two Northeastern utilities being hit by winter storm Nika, which impacted the region with a mix of ice and heavy snow.

SCE&G released 139 contract linemen and nine tree personnel from service to travel to Pennsylvania, Maryland and New Jersey to aid in power restoration. The line crews will be coming from the Beaufort, Charleston, Summerville, Columbia and Aiken areas of the company’s South Carolina service territory. The line crews were released to First Energy Corp. and were expected to be working in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

The tree personnel, who are from the Santee/Elloree area, were released to Public Service Electric & Gas Company in New Jersey.
