Swamp Fox grapplers advance to third round

File Demitre McNeal helped the Ashley Ridge wrestling team beat Sumter in the second round of the playoffs Saturday.

The Ashley Ridge wrestling team advanced to the third round of the state duals playoffs with a win by forfeit over Irmo and a 36-26 win over Sumter Saturday.

The Swamp Foxes, which finished as the Region 8-AAAA runner-up behind Summerville to earn a No. 2 seed for the playoffs, improved to 22-4 on the season with the wins.

Four wrestlers earned bonus points for Ashley Ridge by pinning their Sumter opponent. Ty Jamieson won by pin in the 106-pound match. Christian Cuttino won by pin at 132. Chris Hudgens won by pin at 138. Tyler Moore won by pin at 182.

Also winning their match for the Swamp Foxes were Demitre McNeal (126), Maurice Phillips (152), Coltyn Remeika (170), and Devin Parker (220). They all won a decision in their class.

On Monday, Ashley Ridge traveled to Columbia to face Lexington in the fourth round and was eliminated with a 39-19 loss to the Wildcats.

Lexington will travel to Summerville for the Lowerstate title game scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday. It is a rematch of last year’s semi-final game between Summerville and Lexington, which went on to claim the 2013 Class AAAA state championship.
