The Lady Swamp Foxes have put themselves in prime position to earn a home playoff game.
After a 45-26 win over Beaufort Friday, Ashley Ridge only needs to win one of its final two games of the regular season to secure one of the top two seeds for Region 8-AAAA.
“We are in a great position heading into the last week of the season and we are excited for the opportunity,” Ashley Ridge coach Chris Shaw said. “We have come such a long way in just one year and not a lot of people thought we would be where we are with just two games left in the regular season.”
The bad news for Swamp Fox fans is that final pair of games is against the Ashley Ridge’s toughest completion in the region, Summerville and Colleton County. The Lady Swamp Foxes entered play this week with only one region loss. The Colleton County girls entered this week with three region losses and Summerville entered the week undefeated in region play.
“The key for us is that we continue to play team ball and do all the little things to win games,” Shaw said. “It seems like every night we have a different leading scorer and we are getting help from our bench players on a consistent basis. It’s been a total team effort and it’s going to take a total team effort to continue to do well.”
Kelly Cousins led the Lady Swamp Foxes at Beaufort, scoring a game-high 13 points. Seven other players scored for Ashley Ridge. The Lady Swamp Foxes jumped out to a 17-8 lead in the first period and extended the lead to 14 points at the half. After a strong start to the third period, Ashley Ridge was able to cruise to the victory.
The Lady Swamp Foxes improved to 15-5 with a 7-1 mark in the region with the win. The sole region loss was to Summerville, which Ashley Ridge was scheduled to host Tuesday after press time. The team wraps up its regular season Friday by hosting Colleton County.
