The Green Wave boys earned three key wins last week.
Summerville defeated its three main threats in Region 8-AAAA in consecutive games to move into the lead in the region standings. After defeating Beaufort Tuesday, the Green Wave earned a 62-42 win over Bluffton Friday and a 60-51 win over Fort Dorchester Saturday in a game that was postponed from Jan. 28 due to a winter storm.
“We had a big week,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “We didn’t play well tonight but we played hard. We had a chance to blow it open but didn’t and they came back and cut the lead to 1 before we pulled away again. We couldn’t guard the ball or keep them from penetrating but John Jenkins and Xavier Robinson both had a good game for us.”
The Patriots (13-5, 4-3) had a strong start to take a 13-8 lead into the second period. Then Summerville (17-5, 7-1) cut the lead to 2 by halftime.
Tyler Palmer opened the third period with a shot from behind the arc to give Summerville the lead and momentum.
Palmer and Robinson combined for 11 third-quarter points as the Green Wave outscored the Patriots 16-7 in the period.
Fort Dorchester’s Dimitri Carter penetrated the lane for consecutive buckets to start the fourth and then William Munoz forced a turnover and scored on a break to pull the Patriots within a point, 39-38.
Then Summerville’s John Jenkins took charge, scoring 13 of his game-high 21 points in the final six minutes. Wave point guard Timmy Singleton also hit some key free throws late in the period to help keep the Patriots at bay.
Robinson finished with 13 points while both Singleton and Palmer had 9.
Ky Reese led the Patriots with 15 points while Carter finished with 13 points and Eric Hayward added 10.
The night before Summerville delivered a blow to Bluffton’s region championship hopes by avenging a prior loss to the Bobcats with a 62-42 victory. Bluffton (13-5, 6-2) jumped out to a 12-9 lead in the opening period, but the Wave took a 24-22 lead into the half and built on it in the final two periods.
Jenkins and center Christian Kalacanic led the charge, posting 25 and 20 points, respectively. Kalacanic also had 12 rebounds.
DJ Dobson led Bluffton with 13 points and Jae Middleton added 11 for the Bobcats.
Summerville was scheduled to face Ashley Ridge Tuesday night after press time. The Green Wave will close the regular season by hosting a rematch with Fort Dorchester Thursday.
