Rivalry game goes down to the wireWave girls claim another region title
The Lady Green Wave held off a fierce Lady Swamp Fox rally Tuesday to secure the Region 8-AAAA championship.
Summerville earned a 50-48 victory over Ashley Ridge to improve to 17-6 with a 9-0 mark in region play. Ashley Ridge, the closest team to Summerville in the region standings, fell to 15-6, 7-2.
The Lady Swamp Foxes are scheduled to play Colleton County at 7 p.m. Monday with the chance to clinch second place in the region and the home playoff game that comes with it.
The cross-town rivals played to a 10-10 tie at the end of the first period, but then Summerville held Ashley Ridge to three field goals and a free throw in the second to take a 24-17 lead into the half. The Lady Green Wave continued to be stingy on defense and Rodnesha Capers hit two 3-point shots in the third to help Summerville maintain the lead.
In the final period, Shelby Daly hit a pair of 3s to help keep the Lady Swamp Foxes in the game. Her second pulled Ashley Ridge within a point with 14.2 seconds remaining. Summerville’s Heather Chapman sank a pair of free throws and on the other end of the court Zuri Green grabbed a rebound and was fouled. She hit her free throws to put Summerville up by 5.
The Foxes never gave up the fight. Sophomore Katie Burnette hit a shot from behind the arc to pull Ashley Ridge within 2, but the team had no timeouts so they couldn’t stop the clock. Summerville didn’t even have to inbound the ball.
“That was a thrilling game,” Green said. “I’m glad we got that out of the way.”
Daly finished with a game-high 22 points and Ariel Glover added 10 for Ashley Ridge.
Capers led Summerville with 19 points while Green added 10.
“Rodnesha always comes through for us,” Green said. “It’s great having players like her on your team who you can count on.”
With the top seeding, Summerville secured home-court advantage in the first round of the playoffs.
The Lady Green Wave is trying to advance out of the second round, where it fell last season.
“I like our chances,” Green said. “Most of us have played together since we were on JV so we communicate very well. We should do ok as long as we play together, work the ball around and keep doing the things we have been doing.”
