Green Wave boys claim fourth straight region title
The Green Wave boys clinched their fourth straight Region 8-AAAA championship with a 63-46 win over Ashley Ridge Tuesday.
Summerville improved to 18-5 on the season with an 8-1 mark in region play. With three region losses each, Fort Dorchester, Beaufort and Bluffton are the closest teams to Summerville in the standings so the Green Wave’s final game against Fort Dorchester will have no bearing on the region championship but will help determine which team finishes as the region runner-up.
“Winning four straight is a big accomplishment,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “The biggest thing is we’ve got a group of players who love the gym. None of them misses practice or ever complains and that dedication paid off. And of course John Jenkins is a scoring machine. I think he is the Region Player of the Year and I’m not just saying that because he plays for us.”
Jenkins, who is nearing the 1,000 career points bench mark, led all scorers at Ashley Ridge with 31 points. Center Christian Kalacanic added 10 points for Summerville while Timmy Singleton added 7.
Sean White led the Swamp Foxes with 13 points while Raekwon Jones added 11 points and Tyquan Tucker added 10.
“We had a slow start and Ashley Ridge came out excited and played very well before they cooled off later in the game,” Elliott said. “We played well except for the first eight minutes. They hung in there and didn’t really let us go up by more than 7 or 8 for a long time before we were able to pull away at the end.”
Tucker and Don Smith both hit 3-point shots in the opening period to help the Swamp Foxes take a 15-9 lead into the second. Then Jenkins found his grove and scored 9 points in the second to help Summerville to a 28-22 halftime lead.
White scored 7 of his points in the third, but Kalacanic had four buckets for Summerville. The final period started off well for Ashley Ridge, but Jenkins provided some key buckets and Summerville hit 11 free throws in the fourth.
Summerville’s final game against the Fort was originally scheduled for Thursday, but school was cancelled that day due to weather.
The game will be played at 8 p.m. Feb. 17 at SHS.
The playoff brackets aren’t out yet, but the most likely scenario is that the Green Wave will host Stratford in the first round.
