The Lady Green Wave kept its winning streak in Region 8-AAAA games alive by handing Fort Dorchester a 54-44 loss Monday.

The Summerville girls won their 23rd consecutive region game to improve to 18-6 for the season and complete a clean sweep of region opponents for the second straight year. The Lady Green Wave had clinched the region championship last week but still played with intensity as they closed out the regular season.

“We wanted to keep that streak going plus it was Senior Night and you always want to win on Senior Night,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “All our seniors played really well together. Zuri Green and Heather Chapman had one of the biggest games they’ve had all year so it was exciting. We also wanted to build some momentum going into the playoffs so there was a lot to play for tonight.”

As the region champ, Summerville will host West Ashley Thursday at 6 p.m. in the opening round of the South Carolina Class AAAA playoffs.

“It is going to be a tough game but we are ready for it and excited,” Legare said. “Winning the region is just a small part of what we wanted to accomplish this season so hopefully the girls will remain focused while we prepare for a tough game.”

The starting lineup for Summerville Monday consisted of seniors Kyania Howard, Gabriele Stewart, Chelsi Anderson, Chapman and Green. Those five took all the shots in the opening period as the Lady Green Wave outscored the Lady Patriots 15-8.

Fort Dorchester allowed Summerville to pull out to a double-figure lead early in the second half, but fought to cut the lead to 7 entering the final period. However, Summerville closed strong to take momentum into the playoffs.

Zuri Green led all scorers with 21 points while Chapman added 19 and junior Ashley Green added 6 for Summerville. The Lady Green Wave was 7 of 10 at the free-throw line while the Lady Patriots were 15 of 23.

JaQuanna King led the Lady Patriots with 13 points while Erika Cobb added 8 for the Lady Patriots and Jordan Sprueill added 6.

Fort Dorchester finishes in fourth place for the region and will open the playoffs Thursday at Goose Creek.
