The Green Wave basketball teams will host another playoff double-header Saturday.
Both Summerville teams have advanced to the second round of the Class AAAA playoffs after sweeping a pair of first-round games at home Thursday. The Summerville girls will host North Augusta at 6 p.m. Saturday. After that game, the Summerville boys will play Dutch Fork.
The other District Two teams that made the playoffs this season all lost their first-round game.
The Green Wave boys defeated Stratford 62-48 Thursday.
The Knights gave up three quick buckets to fall behind, but finished the first period strong to only trail by a point, 10-9. Then Summerville outscored Stratford 19-10 to take a 10-point lead into the half.
During the second period, Tyler Palmer hit two 3-point shots for Summerville and John Jenkins hit a free throw to score the 1,000th point of his varsity career. Jenkins finished the night with a game-high 30 points to bring his career total to 1,022 points.
“There aren’t many guys who played for Summerville who scored 1,000 points,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “I’m sure A.J. Green did it, but there probably aren’t but one or two others who did. What really makes it impressive is John didn’t play much as a sophomore. I think he had 30 points his tenth-grade season and the rest were scored over the next two seasons.”
Summerville didn’t let the momentum go to waste and took a 14-point lead into the fourth period. Green Wave center Christian Kalacanic had a strong second half, scoring 12 points in the final two periods to finish with 15 for the game. Palmer finished with 11 points.
Antonio Stinson led Stratford with 14 points while both Demetre Rivers and Thad Thompson added 13 points.
Summerville improved to 20-5 on the season while Stratford fell to 16-9.
“Of course, John scoring 30 was big, but I thought the real key to the game was we limited Rivers to 13 points,” Elliott said. “We decided going in we weren’t going to let him beat us, that we would rather take our chances of one of their other players stepping up. Xavier Robinson and Braylon Wilkerson did a great job defending him tonight.”
The Lady Green Wave downed West Ashley 79-47 Thursday.
The first half was a tight contest. Summerville had a small surge late in the second period to pull ahead for a 39-30 lead at the half. Summerville then outscored the Lady Wildcats 21-5 in the third quarter to put the game out of reach.
Heather Chapman scored a game-high 22 points and Summerville had four other players score in double figures. Zuri Green scored 16, Rodnesha Capers 13 and both Ashley Green and Dalexis Aldridge 10.
Summerville improved to 19-6 on the season while West Ashley was eliminated with a 15-7 record.
The Fort Dorchester basketball teams were swept during a double-header Thursday at Goose Creek. The Patriot boys lost 53-41 to the Gators while the Patriot girls lost 52-25.
The Lady Gators improved to 23-2 on the season while the Lady Patriots finish at 6-11.
The Ashley Ridge girls hosted Blythewood Thursday and fell 39-22. The Lady Swamp Foxes, the No. 2 seed from Region 8-AAAA, finish the season with a 16-7 record.
