Basketball isn’t the only entertainment available in high school gyms these days.
Once the only action on the court during halftime of high school games was the custodian sweeping the floor, but that has changed in recent years. Today fans are treated to all kinds of halftime performances, ranging from dance routines to jugglers.
Ashley Ridge, Fort Dorchester and Summerville high schools all offer some type of halftime entertainment throughout the season.
Anthony Pieretti, who coordinates halftime activities for Ashley Ridge, says basketball games provide a natural venue for school clubs.
“Groups like our dance team coached by Karen Bellush and our step team coached by Tiffany Marine are always looking for places to perform so they were the first to preform here at halftime,” he said. “Then we started looking for other things. Last year we had the school show choir preform. Sometimes we will have a three-point shot competition or something else fun.”
Earlier this month, the Beech Hill Juggling Club preformed for the Ashley Ridge crowd.
“I was so glad when they reached out and asked us about performing,” Pieretti said. “Everyone really enjoyed it. The students look forward to the halftime activities and it gives these groups a chance to showcase their skills. It also gives parents a chance to see their kids preform.”
He says AR officials are open to considering preformances by any school-related group.
