Wrestlers seek individual state titles

Several local wrestlers have advanced to the South Carolina Class AAAA championship tournament.

Ashley Ridge, Cane Bay, Fort Dorchester and Summerville high schools will be represented at the South Carolina 4-A Wrestling Tournament to be held at the Anderson Civic Center Feb. 28 through March 1. A total of 18 District Two wrestlers advanced to the tournament by placing in the Top 4 for their weight class during the Lower State qualifying tournament held in Beaufort last weekend. Wrestlers winning their division in Beaufort receive top seeding for the state tournament.

The Green Wave led the way for the Summerville teams, winning five weight classes and qualifying a wrestler in two others.

Summerville’s James Sass (106-pound class), Daniel Smith (145), John Van Slooten (152), Chad Wood (160) and Anthony Collins (170) all won their class at the qualifier to earn top seeding for the state tournament. Other Summerville wrestlers advancing are Tyler Fachko (126) and Julian Gibbs (220).

Fort Dorchester wrestler Tyre Wright won the 120-pound class at the qualifier. Other members of the Patriot wrestling team advancing to the state tournament are AJ Alford (152), Cato Jenkins (160), Jacob Hutchinson (170), Joseph Hutchinson (182) and Quandre Chisolm (195).

Ashley Ridge wrestler Ben Whitney won the 113-pound class at the qualifier. Other members of the Swamp Fox team advancing are Christian Cuttino (138), Coltyn Remeika (170), Tyler Moore (182) and Kenny Glover (285).

Cane Bay’s Matt Rudy (195) also earned top seeding for the tournament. Cobra wrestler Paul McKeever has advanced in the 132-pound class.
