Since 2007 Kona Ice has given more than $13 million back to neighborhood schools, organizations and sports teams on a national level.
The Kona Ice truck can be seen all over the country and it is known for giving back a percentage of its proceeds to the community.
Summerville resident Kris Lamb recently jumped on the ice wagon and is now a part of the business, serving North Charleston, Hanahan, Summerville, Goose Creek, Ladson and Moncks Corner.
Kona Ice is a mobile shaved ice truck that gives back a percentage for many events for organizations trying to raise money such as nonprofits, schools, sports leagues and churches.
The business started with current president and founder Tony Lamb (no relation to Kris Lamb) who was asked to give back a percentage of his sales for local funds – it appeared everyone was trying to raise money, Kris Lamb said.
Kris joined for the community aspect of the business.
“I wanted to do something in which I could give back to the community,” he said.
Kris said Kona Ice has 450 trucks across the country. He enjoys the business because he knows places like schools need a lot of money and do a lot of fundraising.
“I got into the business because of the community impact with the giveback program,” he said. “I want to be an influence – it’s about making a difference in people’s lives and putting a smile on their faces.”
The Kona Ice truck is recognizable with its tropical calypso music and colorful design. Customers pick from one of the 10 flavors on the truck’s “Flavorwave” (an interactive dispensing system in which individuals select from one or more of the flavors to pour over their ice. Customers can also pick from an additional 20-plus flavors, making 500 different flavor combinations available.
Kris said the Kona Ice truck will be making an appearance at the upcoming Flowertown Festival and Shamrock Shuffle.
The giveback policy applies to any organization trying to raise money.
“The givebacks are a major part of our business,” Lamb said. “I look forward to everyone in the community getting to know who we are.”
