Summerville girls fall in semi-finals

File Zuri Green led the Summerville scorers Friday evening in a losing effort for the Lady Green Wave during the Class AAAA state semi-finals.

A tremendous season for the Lady Green Wave basketball team ended Friday night with a loss in the state semi-finals.

The Summerville girls, making their first appearance in the Lower State championship game since 2000, fell 54-36 to two-time defending state champion Dutch Fork at the Florence Civic Center. After picking up its 23rd consecutive region win to claim the 2014 Region 8-AAAA championship, Summerville defeated West Ashley, North Augusta and Goose Creek in the playoffs before falling to Dutch Fork to finish the season with a 21-7 record.

“I thought we played well on defense and were able to get the shots we wanted to get,” Summerville coach Matt Legare said. “Unfortunately, the ball had a hard time getting in the basket Friday night.”

The Silver Foxes’ defense shutdown the paint in the opening period to throw the Lady Green Wave off its game and take a 6-0 lead into the second period. Summerville forced turnovers throughout the first half, but the team’s offensive struggles allowed Dutch Fork to double that lead.

Summerville’s first points came on a pair of Zuri Green free throws with 6:12 remaining in the second period. With that out of the way, Summerville did manage to get some offensive productivity, but still entered the half down 28-13.

Summerville outscored Dutch Fork 14-10 in the third period.

Ashley Green made a steal and scored on the ensuing break with just more than two minutes remaining in the third to pull Summerville within 8 points, but Dutch Fork remained calm and made some buckets to take a 38-27 lead into the final period.

Dalexis Aldridge hit a jumper midway through the fourth to pull Summerville within 7 points, but the Lady Silver Foxes showed they know how to put a game away with their performance in the final four minutes.

“I tip my hat to Dutch Fork because when we did hit a few shots and were able to make a nice run, they answered with a great deal of poise and experience in the fourth quarter,” Legare said.

A little more than half of the Lady Green Wave points were scored at the free-throw line, where Summerville was 19 of 31.

Senior Zuri Green led the Summerville scorers with 12 points. Fellow senior Heather Chapman was held to 7 points, well below her average for the season. Junior Cierra Mazyck added 6 points for the Lady Green Wave.

Dutch Fork will face Greenwood in the Class AAAA girls’ championship game Friday in Columbia. The Lady Eagles defeated Dorman 74-65 in the other semi-final.

Legare says his players should put the loss behind them and focus on their accomplishments this season.

“I can’t say enough good things about this group of young ladies,” he said. “They won 13 straight games to get to Florence. The Goose Creek victory in the third round was a gutsy team performance where our girls made many big-time plays to keep the season rolling. I’m very proud of the legacy our seniors are leaving behind. They made it to the Final Four by doing things the right way. We also have a good group of underclassmen who want to come back and finish the job. Coach Digby and I are blessed.”
