Jenkins receives high honors

Roger Lee/Journal Scene Green Wave senior John Jenkins has received all-state and all-region honors.

John Jenkins plays the guard position but his nickname could easily be the Post Man because he always delivers.

The Summerville High School senior recently received two prestigious awards. Jenkins is one of only 16 players in the state to be named to the Class AAAA Boys All-state team.

He is also the Region 8-AAAA Boys’ Basketball Player of the Year.

“It is very comfortable knowing you have a consistent scorer every night,” Summerville coach Greg Elliott said. “We did not always know where John’s points would come from (3 pointers, drives to the rim, free throws) but he always delivered. During his junior and senior seasons I don’t think he had more than one game where he did not score double digits.

“He had six 30-point games in the last two years and could have had 40 points against Beaufort once if he would have made some free throws.”

During the 2013-14 season, Jenkins scored one-third of Summerville’s points. He averaged 20.2 points per game, shooting 56 percent from two-point range and 30 percent from three-point range. He was a 67 percent free-throw shooter this year and a 76 percent free-throw shooter last season. He averaged 2.1 assists per game and 3.5 rebounds per game.

Jenkins finished his varsity career with 1,041 points.

Stratford’s Dimitri Rivers, Goose Creek’s Dantez Bennamon and Bluffton’s D.J. Dobson are the other Lowcountry representatives on the all-state team. Gaffney senior L.J. Peak was named the boys’ 4-A Player of the Year.

Jenkins is one of four Summerville players to be named to the Region 8-AAAA boys’ all-region team. Joining him on the list are Green Wave point guard Timmy Singleton, center Christian Kalacanic and forward Xavier Robinson.

Guards Eric Hayward and Ky Reese and center William Munoz represent Fort Dorchester on the all-region team.

Guard Sean White and forward Raekwon Jones represent Ashley Ridge on the all-region team.

Elliot, who has led the Green Wave to four consecutive region championships, was named the boys’ Region Coach of the Year.
